Air Video vs. Boxee Review: iPad Video Streaming Showdown

boxeevsairvideo2If you are anything like me, the iPad was simply too tempting to turn down. Being an iPhone user, I could immediately see the potential of the iPad’s 9.7” screen. Turns out I was right. The iPad is a hit! After taking the financial plunge, I set out to find new and spectacular uses for the device. Enter Air Video…

The pricing model for the iPad is rather peculiar:

$519 – 16Gb wifi
$619 – 32Gb wifi
$719 – 64Gb wifi

I was not interested in 3G connectivity since I could share my iPhone’s connection via “Personal Hotspot”. I opted for the 16Gb model. I could not rationalize spending an additional $100 for 16Gb of flash storage, although Apple’s omission of storage expansion options does make you second guess yourself.

16Gb is not a lot of space these days, as most of us would agree. When it comes to high quality media, albums will cost you about 200Mb each and HD video on average 3Gb each. I needed to find a way to “stream” the large videos to my device in the name of preserving the valuable space on my iPad.

After some quick Google research, I discovered Air Video and shortly thereafter Boxee. Each of these solutions is comprised of server software (which must be installed on your PC or Mac) and a corresponding iPad app.

The both provide a fantastic solution to the iPad storage issue. In testing, I found Air Video to provide better quality playback than Boxee.

See for yourself:

Air Video offers superior video quality as shown above.

Air Video is also highly configurable, while Boxee is more of a “set it and forget it” option.

With that being said, Air Video will cost you $2.99 while Boxee is free.

I hope you find the solution that works for you. Enjoy!
