How To Customize iPhone Home Screen Icons

iphone pic1If you’re like me you’ve got a few websites that you go to a lot with your iPhone when you’re on the go. You’ve probably even saved a few web pages to your home screen for quick access. It’s a great feature to be able to do that.  And if the website has a mobile version, it's almost like having its own dedicated app.  The problem is that some web sites have their own home screen bookmark icons that look great, but there are plenty more that don’t. In that case, the iOS does an interesting thing. It takes a thumbnail screen shot of the web page and uses that as the bookmark icon picture. Pretty clever Apple, but when you have a bunch of bookmarks on your home screen the tiny little thumbnail screen shots tend to look alike. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to customize the icons yourself?

Well, now you can...

If you don’t already know how to add a bookmark to your home screen, simply tap the Menu button in Safari and select the “Add to Home Screen” option, you’ll be prompted to edit the name of the bookmark and just like that you’ve got quick access to whatever websites you want right from your iPhone or iPod home screen.

Of course we’re not done there.

Say you've chosen to add the TSN mobile website to your home screen (m.tsn.ca).  Before you go through the process you'll first need what is called a bookmarklet.  Basically a bookmarklet is a javascript execution that can run with Safari.  People create bookmarklets to get Safari to do things that Apple left out of the programming, like for instance, finding text in a webpage.  But, for this task you'll need a bookmarklet that can specify where to get the picture to use for your thumbnail icon. There are plenty available on the internet like this one:

Javascript Bookmarklet

The easiest way to save this bookmarklet onto your iDevice is to actually use your iPhone or iPod, click the link above and follow the instructions in the new window.  Once you've save the bookmarklet and labelled it "Set Home Screen Icon" you're ready to move on to the next step.

Set Home Screen Icon

Now, you’ll need to locate the picture you want to use as the actual thumbnail icon. Just do a Google image search and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding whatever picture you have in mind. Copy the URL for this image.

Select AllCopy

Now, go to the webpage that you want to set a home screen bookmark for.  Then, go to your bookmarks list and click on your “Set Home Screen Icon” bookmark. You’ll be prompted to enter a URL.

Paste the picture URL that you have copied into your clipboard.

Press "Okay."  Next, hit the menu button and select “Add to Home Screen.”

add tsn

There, you’re done. You should have a nice home screen bookmark with the icon you selected.  Notice the TSN Mobile bookmark on the left without a custom icon thumbnail versus the icon on the right with the custom thumbnail picture we chose.
