DriverMax Software Review

About a year ago I had an issue with my, admittedly, outdated laptop computer.  My hard drive crapped out and so I bought a new one.  Presto, everything's back to normal.  Not so fast, when I tried to reinstall my operating system, all the core files were lost with my old hard drive.  Plus, to top it all off I had misplaced my install CDs.

Well, I managed to find a copy of a newer OS, but it had trouble with the drivers for my outdated machine.  I had to go around and update nearly half of the necessary drivers manually.  Negative fun.  Plus, in my searching for a better way I found many online threads indicating that I was not the only one with driver issues.

So, listen up everyone.  Driver Max produced by "innovative solutions" is indeed an innovative solution.  It is a free software that will automatically detect the drivers on your system and tell you what version you have of each as well as whether they're up to date.  (It is spyware and virus free of course!)  It will tell you the most recent release of your particular drivers.  It does it all.  And not only that, it's so easy my grandmother could work it.

First the program will scan your system and determine your setup.  Next it will load a list of your drivers and the version you have installed followed by the latest version.  This is all displayed via your internet browser.  If you have a driver that is not up to date you simply click on the download icon and the "Drivermax Agent" does the rest.

DriverMax has another nifty feature to it.  It allows you to backup your drivers for fast update in the event you should decide to reinstall your system.  A great time saver.

So, what are the downsides?

Unfortunately with the latest update to the DriverMax software (a mandatory update by the way) the program now asks periodically via a pop-up window whether you would be interested in updating to DriverMax Pro (at a cost) and there is no way of turning off this pop-up.  The best you can do is limit it to a maximum popup frequency of once every two weeks.

However, this being the biggest flaw in the (free) software it's not too bad of a deal.  You could always download the program use it to update and backup your drivers then uninstall it to avoid annoying update requests.

Let's face it, for a quick and easy driver solution most people would likely be willing to fork over a few bucks to avoid the headache, but DriverMax gives you that solution for free.  It's worthwhile.
